As my field of hemp grew in the summer of 2021, with a few sunflower seeds sown for good measure, I wondered about the flocks of red-winged black birds that loved to hangout in the big cottonwood tree nearby. Many weeks later, those giant mammoth sunflower were heavy with seeds and served as big neon signs to the local birds: EAT HERE !

With fascination and horror, I watched these marauding birds swooped first for the sunflowers, but then quickly discover the tasty hemp seeds, now starting to burst from their green pods. Imagine tall swaying hemp plants and sunflowers, with a slew of birds feasting, and then seemingly 'playing' as they hopped joyfully from stalk to stalk, sampling this new cannabis delicacy.

Instead of being upset about losing seed to the birds, I became secretly elated. Plants spread via seeds passing-thru birds, so these red-wings were actually helping to spread the good news about hemp!
